IGS First Annual Christmas Dinner & Presentation Night

First of all I would hope all our golf members and supporters had a great Christmas and wish you all a prosperous new year.

Imanyo Golf Society started in October 2014 and with the help and support of Antonio and Norma from Imanyo Pub in Daya Nueva has now reached a level of over 100 members.

This year we had our first annual Christmas dinner and presentation night, the venue was The Club House at Marquesa Golf Club, 80 people attended the dinner and a very good night was had by all, a big thanks to Aija and her staff for their excellent food, service and hospitality.  We announced the overall yearly awards, the most nearest the pins award went to “The Wine Collector”, Brian Court with 9, to him that is a case and a half of wine.  The best player of the year came down to the last competition of the year with both players on the same amount of wins and runner up places the eventually the overall winner was Donald Main.  We also ran two football cards raising €200.00 for our chosen charity for 2016.

In 2016 we chose to raise money for Caritas Daya Nueva, a charity that helps the poor and vulnerable in the village.  With various events, raffles, football cards and extremely kind donations we managed to raise a fantastic €1500 which you can see being presented to Daya Nueva’s priest Juan Parroco, by Steve Day, the golf society captain and Antonio García Gallud, the owner of Imanyo Pub.

All 2017 competitions are now on the web site but there are very few spaces left so check your dates when booking your flights.

Ted Adams Trophy 7th December at Alicate Golf

This was the second time we have played for this trophy and many thanks to Ted and Ann Adams for sponsoring the day, their son came over from the UK again especially to play in this competition and defend his win from last year, he was included in the count back with winning points, but four players finished on the same score and sadly he missed out and finished third.

We had a very good turnout for our second visit in a matter of a month to Alicante where the course was in great condition considering we had had rain for two days prior, there was only one bunker out off play due to maintenance so well done the ground staff. The day was perfect for golf with the sun out and a pleasant 70 degrees. We played full handicap Stableford split into three groups A for low handicappers, B for medium handicappers and C, for the higher handicappers.

Winner of the ”Ted Adams Trophy” on count back in group B was “I want my handicap cut” Donald Main with 27 points, runners up all from group B on 27 points were Nigel Tozer, Neil Adams, and Martin Gadney.  Winner of group A was Drew Sneddon with 25 points, runner up was John Macmillan with 23 points, group C winner was Andy Ramage with 18 points and runner up was Dave Rotchell with 16 points. Three nearest the pins were all won by one player Nigel Tozer on holes 3, 12, and 17.

Two football cards were won Ted Adams with Hull City and Dennis with Nottingham Forest both winning €20 and raising €40 for this year’s charity, Caritas Daya Nueva.

We would like to thank Antonio, Norma and staff at Imanyo Bar for the fantastic food and great hospitality.

Dave Rotchell Birthday Trophy 23rd November at Altorreal

This is the third year this trophy has been played for, many thanks to Dave Rotchell for sponsoring the day.

We played at one of the societies favourite courses, Altorreal, although the day did not start very well regarding the weather...yes rain and a lot of it, we decided to make the trip to Murcia hoping it would have stopped by the time we arrived, well the good news is that it did stop and we ended up with near perfect weather conditions, the course was a bit wet in places having rained for two days prior but the new drainage system worked very well although we had to keep the buggies on the pathways.

The format for the day was Texas scramble pairs, low handicap player partnered with a high handicap player scoring Stableford points, but the twist at the end was we drew three blind holes for double points.

Winners of the ”Dave Rotchell Trophy” were Martin Gadney “Watch My Handicap” and at last a winner, Ronnie King with 47 points, runners up were Ian Bell and Phil Ward “Minty” with 45 points.  Nearest the pins were, hole 5 “The Wine Collector” Brian Court, holes 8 and 10 “Watch My Handicap” Martin Gadney and hole 17 Mo Chaplin.

The football card was won by “The Wine Collector” Brian Court with West Ham Utd winning €20 and raising €20 for this year’s charity, Caritas Daya Nueva.

Due to Imanyo’s being closed for holidays we relocated to Yo Yo restaurant for the presentation, thanks for the hospitality.

Phil Ward Carers Cup 9th November at Alicante Golf

This is the third year this cup has been played for and many thanks go to Phil and Margaret Ward for sponsoring the day and also helping to raise money for the poppy appeal.  We had defending winner of the last two years, Eamon Murphy, paired with lady golfer Mo Chaplin, hoping to retain the cup for the third time and they clinched it by four points.

This was a re-arranged game from the 2nd November as we had to cancel the game at Alenda, many thanks go to Alicante Golf for accommodating us at short notice, this was the first time that the society, and most players had played this course. The format was pairs Texas Scramble scoring Stableford points, for those in the UK the weather was sunshine but with a breeze, some players were still in shorts and T shirts!

Eventually we arrived at the course, we found all the staff very accommodating and pointing us in the right direction where needed.

Winner of the”Phil Ward Carers Cup” was Eamon Murphy and Mo Chaplin with an incredible 42 points, runners up were “Always Near” Dave Field and Ian Chetwynd with 38 points, the Endeavour award went to “I’m back” Alan Rodger and “Mr Endeavour” Walter Donovan, with a good score of 30 points this just shows how close all the pairs were, only one nearest the pin was won, hole 12 Ian Chetwynd...shows how tough the par threes are.

The presentation was held at our temporary base, Yo Yo Garden while Imanyo staff take a well deserved holiday.  The football card was won by our sponsor Phil Ward with West Ham Utd winning €20 and raising €20 for the poppy appeal.

José Domingo Garcia Gallud Memorial Cup 19th October at Altorreal

This is the start of our third year of the forming of the society and we started the year off by playing for the José Domingo Garcia Gallud Memorial cup in memory of Antonio’s (Imanyo’s owner)younger brother who sadly died in a car accident 20 years ago.

As usual we all arrived early at Imanyo’s where the day started with the traditional full English breakfast.  The format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups, high handicaps and low handicaps.  On arriving at Altorreal the weather was just brightening up after overnight rain, we ended up with superb golfing conditions so a big thanks to Antonio and all his staff for their hard work.

Chris Baillie and Eamon Murphy, the two previous year’s winners, especially stayed on before returning to Scotland and Ireland to try and defend their respective titles and retain the cup but alas it was our newest member, Martin Gadney, who stole the day with a magnificent 37 points.

Winner of the José Domingo Garcia Gallud Memorial Cup was group A winner Martin Gadney with 37 points, runner up in group A was Dave field on count back with 26 points, winner of group B was another regular winner when he is here, Donald Main with 31 points, group B runner up was another regular name “Keep It In The Family” Carol Murphy on count back 28 points.  There were six nearest the pins and the winners were hole 2 in two shots “Keep It In The Family” Eamon Murphy, hole 5 in one shot Ian Chetwynd, hole 8 in one shot Martin Gadney, hole 10 in one shot no winner, hole 16 in three shots “I’m Back” Alan Rodger, hole 17 in one shot “The Wine Collector” Brian court.

On arriving at the course we received a friendly greeting from the staff, although we had not played there since January.  We found the course a little tired with fairways and greens a bit patchy and bunkers without sand in, the weather was cloudy at first but once the sun broke through it was perfect for golf.

All players arrived early at Imanyo’s where the day started with the traditional full English breakfast, the format was full handicap Stableford pairs.  On arriving at the course we received a friendly greeting from the staff, the course was in good condition, the greens still had the summer fluff in the grass which slowed the ball down a bit and some of the bunkers needed attention, but the fairways were in good condition.

Winner of the Captains cup was John Mcmillan with 32 points, runner up was Dave Moore with 31 points.  Only five of the six nearest the pins were won, hole 3 in one shot by John Mcmillan, hole 4 in two shots by Eamon Murphy, hole 5 in one shot was a no winner, hole 10 in 3 shots by John Mcmillan, hole 13 in one shot by Lesley Heap and hole 16 in one shot by Dave Moore.

The football card was won by Eileen Denyer with Hearts winning €20 and raising €20 for this year’s charity, Caritas Daya Nueva.

We would like to thank Daya Frutas and Mick the Grip for sponsoring the day, also Antonio, Norma and staff at Imanyo’s Bar for the fantastic food and great hospitality.

IGS Competition 10th February at Bonalba

The day started with breakfast at Imanyo's where we made the draw, 16 players took part with the format being full handicap stableford.

This was the first time for a number of members to play our new course Bonalba, everyone eventually arrived on time...after one couple claimed their sat-nav took them to the wrong course!  There were fifteen male members and only one female member so you can guess the outcome?

The course was in fair condition, fairways a bit brown and thin in places due to lack of rain (sorry UK), the greens were in excellent condition and true. The weather (for you in the UK) started a bit chilly, needed a sweater, but when the sun got to work the temperature was very pleasant with a light wind.

The day was won by Lesley Heap with 30 points, runner up was John Mcmillan with 29 points, only one nearest the pin was won on hole 4 by regular winner, one way or another, Donald Main, the Endeavour award went to Dave Rotchell, I always said to him he would win something one day...no score mentioned.

Back at Imanyo’s there were a few drinks and a lovely meal waiting. The football card was won by John Kemp with Hearts, the money raised goes to our charity for 2016 Caritas Daya Nueva.

Scottish Cup (Quaich) 25th January at Altorreal

This was the first major cup of the year played at one of our favourite courses, Altorreal, where we were greeted with the usual organised set up and the course was in great condition.

The day was sponsored by our Scottish friends Andy Ramage, Alex Porteous and Chris Baillie, Chris unfortunately could not make it this year. 22 players met at Imanyo’s where the day started with the usual full English breakfast.

The format was pairs Texas Scramble, players were paired up into eleven teams with a lower handicap player pairing with a higher handicap player, there was only five shots between the highest and lowest which the finale scores reflected.  After the golf we all went back to Imanyo’s for the presentation and to celebrate Burns night with traditional Scottish food, pipes and entertainment by the superb band Bardoi.

Winners of the ”Scottish Cup” (Quaich) were Christine Doolan and Andy Speck with 39 points, runners  up on three way count back was “I’m playing very well” Alex Porteous and Andy Ramage with 41 points,  the three nearest the pins were won, hole 5 by Pete Doolan, hole 8 by “I’m playing very well” Alex Porteous, and hole 17 by Dave Saunders.

Two football cards were sold on the night and were won by Dave Rotchell with Blackburn Rovers and Sandy with Hearts both winning €20 each and raising €40 for this year’s charity, we also ran a raffle which raised €487.00 with all the money (€527.00) going to our sponsored charity for 2016, Caritas Daya Nueva.

We would like to thank all the businesses and people who donated prizes to the raffle, also Antonio, Norma and staff at Imanyo Bar for the fantastic food and great hospitality.

IGS Competition 13th January at Alenda

This was the first game of 2016 as usual the day started with breakfast at Imanyo's where we made the draw, 16 players took part; the format was full handicap stableford.

Nearly a year ago on the 28th January we played at this course and we lost two players on the way, Ted Adams and Brian Court, well this year we went one better than that, the lead car driven by Alan Ralph with co pilot Steve Day “I know were the course is” who was on his mobile phone missed the turning for the course and ended up going to Benidorm on a toll road. They should not have turned round in between tolls so ended up paying a bit more of the toll fee than they should have, the irony of this is that two other cars were following and guess what Ted Adams and Brian Court were in one and Andy Ramage with the winner of the day Judy Evans in the other.

Eventually when everyone arrived we found everything sorted and ready to play, the course was in its usual great condition the weather (for you in the UK) started a bit chilly, needed a sweater, but when the sun got to work the temperature was over 70 degrees and no wind perfect for golf.

The day was won by Judy Evans with 32 points, Runner up on count back was Donald Main with 30 points with Alan Ralph “Keep It In The Family” also on 30 points. Only 3 nearest the pins were won, hole 3 by our new member John Fullicks, hole 13 by Wendy Ralph “Keep It In The Family” and hole 16 by Lesley Heap, the Endeavour award went to Ted Adams no score mentioned.

Back at Imanyo’s there were a few drinks and a lovely meal waiting. The football card was won by Steve Day with Middlesbrough, the money raised goes to our charity for 2016 Caritas Daya Nueva.
