Remembrance Day Cup

25th October

This is the fourth time we played for the Remembrance Day Cup sponsored by Imanyo golf society.

Arriving at Bonalba we found everything ready and waiting, for high season in the golfing calendar we found that the course looked tired, some bare fairways, bunkers not edged and lacking sand, greens that were patchy and needed a lot of pitch repairing, conclusion is the course is not up to high season prices.

Twenty players took part starting at Imanyo’s for the traditional English breakfast.  The format was singles full handicap Stableford, for those in the UK the weather was sunshine and a pleasant 80 degrees with a very gusty wind to start off with, all players were still in shorts. The scores between groups A and B were very low and close with the winner eventually coming from group B.

Winner of the Remembrance Day Cup from group B was “Flying Scotsman” Andy Ramage with 37 points, runner up was “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon with 27 points, third place was the real “Flying Scotsman” Donald Main with 26 points.  Winner of group A was “Lion” John Fairbrass with 33 points, runner up “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly with 32 points and third place went to Paul Davison on count back with Steve Gain with 29 Points. Los Amigos Cup

5th April

This is the fifth year we have played for this cup, sadly Tony Whyatt passed away four years ago but fellow members and friends Andy Godfrey and Alan Martin have taken the sponsorship in Tony’s memory.

This was our fourth visit this season to our favourite course Altorreal, the course was in its usual good condition. Once again, the weather was excellent for golf with the temperature at a pleasant 25 degrees and pure sun, so the order of the day was shorts.  We played Tony’s favourite team format which had four players in a team changing partners every 6 holes scoring with the better ball Stableford points.

Six teams took part in a very tight scoring competition with only four points between fifth and first places with the eventual winners of the Los Amigos Cup on count back were Steve Burns, Chris Darling, Ian Chetwynd and Steve Mathers with 78 points, runners up were Peter Kelly, John Bolt, Mo Chaplin and Graham Rumsey also with 78 points. All the nearest the pins were won group A hole 3 in John Bolt, hole 15 and 17 Alan Martin, group B, hole 4 “I Love Blue” Brian Gordon, hole 9 “Sat Nav” Steve Day, hole 17 “Fish Called Wanda” Mo Chaplin, best front 9 on count back  went to “Sat Nav” Steve Day with 19 points and best back 9 went to “Mr Blackpool” Ian Chetwynd also with 19 points, the two’s pot of €60 was won by Alan Martin on hole 17.

The football card was won by Christine Davison with Middlesborough winning €40 and raising €40 for this year’s charities.
