9 Iron Cup

19th January

Once again, we would like to thank Mo Chaplin for sponsoring the 9 Iron Cup, which is our first sponsored cup competition of 2022. Twenty-one players travelled for the first time to play at La Torre golf, the course was in reasonable condition although the tee boxes and a few fairways needed more attention, on the plus side all the bunkers were full of sand and there were many bunkers! you can see how difficult the course was by the scores as nobody played to their HCP. The weather was a cold start and eventually reached a pleasant 70 degrees with a light wind, perfect for a day’s golf.  The format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups, A and B with a winner from each group, one being the overall winner.

The winner of the 9 Iron Cup was “The Joker” Mick Billins from group B with a score of 34 points, runner up in group B was “Lady Champion 2021” Mo Chaplin with 32 points, third place went to “Tricky” Rik Wood with 30 points.  Winner from group A was “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly with 30 points, runner up in group A was “He’s on Fire “Steve Burns with 29 points and third place went to Colin Deare with 27 points.  Nearest the pins winners in group A were Steve Burns hole 7, Colin Deare hole 10 and Sean McGuinness hole 17, group B winners were Mick Billins hole 6, Andy Neil hole 13 and Mo Chaplin hole 15, best front 9 went to Steve Burns with 17 points and best back 9 went to Andy Neil with 19 points. Scottish Cup (Quaich)

2nd February

The Scottish Cup (Quaich) is sponsored by our Scottish friends Chris Baillie, Alex Porteous and Donald Main, this is the first time since 2019 that we have been able to play this competition due to bad weather and of course the pandemic, unfortunately, Alex and Chris could not make the competition this year. This was our first visit of the year to the very testing Hacienda Riquelme course which favoured the lower handicappers in group A. 24 players took part and on arrival we were welcomed by friendly staff who had everything ready and waiting for us. The course was still in the recovery stage from being closed since 2019 so fairways and greens were not up to standard for high season golf, the weather was a magnificent 25 degrees with pure blue skies so shorts for most players were the order of the day.  The format was singles playing Stableford split into two groups with an overall winner.

Winner of “The Scottish Cup” (Quaich) from group A with a magnificent 40 points was “I love Putting” Craig Justham, runner up was Colin Deare with 34 points and third place went to, he’s back “Happy Hacker” Alan Martin with 32 points. Winner of group B was new member “6 inch?” Ian Birch with 38 points, runner up was “Flying Scotsman” Donald Main with 31 points and third place went to “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden with 29 points. Group A nearest the pins were hole 4 “5 Wood” Chris Houghton, hole 9 “Happy Hacker” Alan Martin and hole 15 “Sea Captain” Andy Godfrey, Group B nearest the pins were hole 5 “The Joker” Mick Billins, hole 10 “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph and hole 13 “6 inch?” Ian Birch, best front 9 went to “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden with 20 points and best back 9 went to “Flying Scotsman” Donald Main with 14 points. The two’s pot was split 4 ways each winning €3 and they were Mick Billins, Donald Main, Brian Court and Colin Deare.

The winner of the football card was “Paw” Derry Quinlan with Bristol City winning €40, and raising €40 for our 2022 charities.

We would like to thank Antonio, Manoli and staff for the good food, drink and hospitality.

Los Amigos Cup

16th February

This is the fourth year we have played for this cup, sadly Tony Whyatt, passed away three years ago but fellow members and friends, Andy Godfrey and Alan Martin, have taken the sponsorship in Tony’s memory.

This was our second visit this season to our favourite course Altorreal, the course was in good condition but the tee boxes did need some attention. Once again, the weather was excellent for golf with the temperature at a pleasant 23 degrees and pure sun, so the order of the day was shorts.  We played Tony’s favourite format which had four players in a team changing partners every 6 holes scoring with the better ball Stableford points.

Six teams took part in a very tight scoring competition and the eventual winners of the Los Amigos Cup were Chris Houghton, Martin Gadney, Steve Day and Mo Chaplin with 79 points, runners up were Andy Godfrey, Steve Ayre, Gary Smith and Graham Rumsey with 76 points. All the nearest the pins were won group A hole 4 in 3 shots “5 Wood” Chris Houghton, hole 8 in 1 shot “Sea Captain” Andy Godfrey, hole 11 in 4 shots new member George O Hara, group B, hole 5 in 1 shot “Tricky” Rik Wood, hole 12 in 4 shots was “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden, hole 15 in 5 shots was “Lord” Alan Freelove, best front 9 went to “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly with 20 points and best back 9 went to “Chippy” Gary Smith with 17 points, the two’s pot of €20 was won by “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly.

The football card was won by Dave Sanders with Stoke City winning €40 and raising €40 for this year’s charities.
