Elaine Ayre Trophy

It was a fantastic day for our first time sponsor Steve Ayre in memory of his wife Elaine who sadly passed away a year ago.

 

The day started with the traditional full English breakfast at Sheerin’s, twenty-one players took part and the format was full handicap Stableford playing in two groups with an overall winner.

 

On arrival at Alicante, we received the usual friendly greeting from the caddy master and his team with everything ready and waiting, the course was in great condition from tee boxes to the flag and the weather was blue skies, sunny with a temperature of 23 degrees, players still in shorts.

 

Overall winner from group A was birthday boy Steve Gain with another handicap cutting game score of 42 points, runner up was new member Graham Lambie with 39 points and third place was Gary Hill with 33 points, group B winner was “Sat Nav” Steve Day with 34 points, runner up was Kevin Quinn with 37 points and third place was Steve Hopkins with 35 points. There were six nearest the pins, group A, hole 5 Gary Hill, hole 8 “Watch this shot” Andy Godfrey, hole 16 Steve Gain, group B hole 9 “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon, hole 12 Tony Alcock and hole 18 Steve Hopkins. Best front 9 went to Flying Scotsman” Andy Ramage with 22 points and best back 9 was Mick Forder with 14 points, the two’s pot was shared between Brian Gordon on hole 8 and Steve Gain on hole 17 so they split the pot of €15.00

Ted Adams Trophy

11th December

Ted was one of our founder members but sadly he passed away earlier this year so many thanks to Ann Adams and family for their continued sponsorship and support, this is the 10th year we have played for Ted’s trophy.

 

This was our last society competition of the year and it went down to the wire for the player of the year in groups A & B. We played at El Plantio where the course was in excellent condition. The day started off with the threat of light rain so wet weather gear was the order of the day, it was chilly and the rain only lasted an hour then ended up perfect for golf with light cloud making it a pleasant 70 degrees, the format for the day was full handicap Stableford split into two groups.

 

Winner of the Ted Adams Trophy from group A was Gary Hill with a handicap cutting score of 42 points, runner up was our “Usain Bolt” John Bolt with 36 points and third place went to Ian Birch with 35 points.  Winner of group B was “Keep it in the Family” Wendy Ralph with 38 points, runner up was “I’ve not played for 3 months” Donald Main with 34 points and third place went to “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph with 32 points. Nearest the pin’s winners were group A hole 3 Ian Birch, hole 15 “Watch this Drive” Andy Godfrey and hole 14 no winner, group B was easy holes 4, 7, & 11 went to “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph. Best front nine went to “Lord Gain” Steve Gain with 20 points and best back nine went to “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon with 18 points. The Two’s pot was shared between Steve Gain and Kevin Quinn both downing in two shots on hole 9 winning €7.50 each.

 

The Football card was won by Paul Davison with Sheffield Wednesday winning €40 so raising €40 for our chosen charities of 2024.

Sheerin's Cup

30th October

It ended up a great day to play for the Sheerin’s Trophy after storm Dana passed around our area and left absolute devastation in the Valencia region.

 

The day started with the traditional full English breakfast in Sheerin’s, twenty-four players took part and the format was full handicap Stableford playing in two groups with an overall winner.

 

On arrival at El Plantio we received the usual friendly greeting from Daniel and his team with everything ready and waiting, the course was in great condition considering the weather we had in the previous 48 hours. The weather was blue skies, sunny with a temperature of 25 degrees.

 

Between both groups lowest score was 20 and the highest was only one under par 35. Winner from group B on count back with group A winner was “Flying Scotsman” Andy Ramage with a score of 35 points and a back 9 of 20 points, runner up again on a three-way count back was Alan Doyle with 31 points and a back 9 of 18 points, third place was Keith James with 31 points and a back 9 of 16 points and fourth place was Steve Day 31 points with a back 9 of 14 points, group A winner on count back was “Ding Dong” Joe Bell with 35 points and a back 9 of 19 points, runner up was Paul Davison with 35 points and a back 9 of 15 points and third place was “Twelve Trees” Steve Ayre with 34 points. There were six nearest the pins, group A, hole 3 Michael O’Keeffe, hole 12 “Lion” John Fairbrass and hole 14 Steve Gain, group B holes 2 and 7 Paul Owen and hole 18 Jim Doyle. Best front 9 went to “Sat Nav” Steve Day with 17 points and best back 9 was Steve Hopkins with 18 points, the two’s pot was won by Michael O’Keeffe on hole 18 winning €30.

 

The doubles semi-final match play was won by Steve Ayre and Lee George winning by 2up beating Peter Kelly and Paul Owen, the doubles final is Steve Ayre and Lee George playing Brian Court and Steve Day.

Between both groups lowest score was 20 and the highest was only one over par 37. Winner from group A was Ian Bell with a score of 37 points, runner up was Paul Davison with 35 points, third place was Steve Ayre with 34 points and fourth place was Steve Gain 31 points, group B winner was John Collins with 34 points and runner up was Tony Alcock with 30 points. There were six nearest the pins, group A, great treble on holes 1, 5 and 18 Ian Bell and hole 11 Steve Gain, group B hole 7 “Sat Nav” Steve Day, hole 10 Kevin Quinn. Best front 9 went to Steve Hopkins with 17 points and best back 9 was Steve Gain with 18 points, the two’s pot was not won so the next match it stands at €30.00.

5th October

It was a fantastic day for the second year running to play for the Frome Firm Golf Bowl sponsored by Steve Burns and Sean McGuinness.

 

The day started with the traditional full English breakfast in Sheerin’s, thirty-one players took part and the format was full handicap Stableford playing in two groups with an overall winner.

 

On arrival at Altorreal we received the usual friendly greeting from Antoino and his team with everything ready and waiting, the course was in great condition again from tee boxes to the flag and the weather was blue skies, sunny with a temperature of 35 degrees.

 

Between both groups all the scores were between 21 and 35, the overall winner on count back with group B winner eventually came from group A and was Gary Hill with a score of 35 points, runner up on count back was “Footsie” Lee George with 32 points and third place was “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly also with 32 points, group B winner was “Ding Dong” Joe Bell with 35 points, runner up was “Hawaii 5 O” Steve Marr with 34 points and third place was “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon with 32 points. There were six nearest the pins, group A hole 3 Peter Kelly, hole 9 Ian Bell and hole 12 Adrian Roberts group B hole 4 Joe Bell, hole 8 No winner and hole 16 Kenny Dow.  Best front 9 on count back was Ian Bell with 16 points and best back 9 was Adrian Roberts with 18 points, the two’s pot was won on hole 8 with Andy Godfrey winning €15.00.

Collins Continental Cup

18th September

 

It was a fantastic day for our first competition of the new Spanish golf season 2024/25 which was sponsored by Danny and Sharon Collins, who are one of our original sponsors since we started ten years ago in 2014.

 

The day started with the traditional full English breakfast at Sheerin’s, twenty-six players took part and the format was full handicap Stableford scoring individual points and at the end we drew out blind partners for a doubles competition with both scores added together.

 

On arrival at Alicante, we received the usual friendly greeting from the caddy master and his team with everything ready and waiting, the course was in great condition from tee boxes to flag. The weather was sunny and the forecast rain stayed away with a nice temperature of 26 degrees.

 

The winners on count back were Paul Davison individual score 40 points and Sean McGuinness with combined score of 67 points, runners up also with 67 points were Lee George individual score 42 points and Brian Gordon, third place also on count back went to Andy Godfrey and Keith James beating Alan Martin and Chris Baillie on 66 points. There were six nearest the pins, four for group A and two for group B, there was also a longest drive, group A holes 7 and 17 “He was on Fire” Steve Burns, hole 11 Steve Marr and hole 14 Gary Hill, group B this is easy holes 6 and 15 “Hammer” Gary Smith, the Longest Drive trophy was on hole 1 out of 26 players only three hit the fairway they were “Sat Nav” Steve Day “Lion” John Fairbrass and eventual winner Steve Gain. Best front 9 was Steve Hopkins with 21 points and best back 9 was “He is on Fire” Steve Burns with 18 points, the two’s pot was won and shared between Steve Burns hole 17 and Peter Kelly hole 3 both sharing a prize pot of €15.

Ryder Cup

3rd & 4th September

 

Twenty-four players turned out to participate in this now popular competition which started in 2018.  The players were blind drawn into 2 teams with the chairman leading one team and the vice chairman the other.


On day 1 we met for breakfast at Sheerin’s where the order of play was announced, six double matches took place at La Finca golf course and at the end of the day the score favoured the vice chairman’s team with a 5 to 1 lead.

 

Day 1 saw 6 nearest the pins played, three in group A and three in group B, group A hole 5 Steve Burns, hole 13 Andy Godfrey and hole 17 Steve Martin, group B hole 3 Alex Porteous and holes 8 and 10 Tom Goulden.

 

Day 2 also started with breakfast at Sheerin’s the order of play was announced and also the previous days results before we travelled back to La Finca. We played 12 singles which proved to be very hard for the Chairmans team to pull back the points needed. The chairman’s team nearly came out on top by drawing 5 points to 5 points with 2 matches halved but ended up losing Ryder Cup again 11 points to 7.  Well done to the Vice Chairmans team for winning the Ryder Cup for the last six years. Nearest the pins on day 2 group A hole 4 Gary Hill, hole 12 Sean McGuinness and hole 17 John Bolt, group B hole 1 Martin Gadney, hole 6 Paul Davison and hole 18 Brian Gordon. The player of the tournament over the two days with both gross scores added together was Steve Martin with 82 points, runner up was Steve Burns with 72 points, third place was Terry Hall with 71 points and fourth place was a tie between Mike Sharlot and Martin Gadney both on 70 points.

Phil A-Ward Trophy

Phil Ward was one of our original members of our golf society, sadly Phil suddenly passed away on the 25th August 2022. We would like to thank Billy Jones for sponsoring the golf day in Phil’s name.

 

We started with a full English breakfast in Sheerin’s, 23 players took part the format for the day was singles full handicap Stableford played in two groups.

 

On arriving at Font Del Llop, we received a friendly and organised greeting from the caddy master and his staff.  The course was in great condition which we virtually had to ourselves; the weather was a very hot 38 degrees!

 

The overall winner of the Phil (Minty) A-Ward Trophy came from group “A” winning with 43 points was Michael Okeeffe, runner up on count back was “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness with 41 points and third place went to “Footsie” Lee George also with 41 points, fourth place was John Bolt with 40 points. Winner from group B was Paul Owen with 38 points and runner up was “Fish Called Wanda” Mo Chaplin with 32 points. Winners of nearest the pins were group A hole 4 was shared between “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness and Footsie” Lee George both downing in 4 shots, hole 9 Steve Gain and holes 11 and 17 Gary Hill, group B holes 8 and 13 went to Paul Owen, best front nine with 19 points went to Steve Gain and best back nine went to “Twelve Trees” Steve Ayre with 21 points, the two’s pot was won and the €20 was shared between Lee George, Mo Chaplin, Michaël Okeeffe and Steve Hopkins.

 

The Singles knockout quarter-final winner was Tom Goulden beating Steve Ayre on the 19th hole after tying playing 18 holes.

This was another close competition with high scores, the overall winner of the Par and Away Trophy eventually came from group “A” on a two-way count back with Steve Gain went to “Three Clubs” Sean McGuiness with a handicap cutting score of 43 points, runner up, also with 43 points, was Steve Gain, third place went to “Lion” John Fairbrass with 42 points and fourth place went to “Tom Tom” Brian Court with 40 points. Winner from group B, with another handicap cutting score, was Tony Alcock with 42 points, runner up was “Hammer” Gary Smith with 39 points. Winners of the nearest the pins were group A, hole 5 “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden, hole 13 Gary Hill and hole 15 Michael O’Keeffe, group B winners were, hole 6 Alan Doyle, hole 9 no winner and hole 18 Tony Alcock, best front nine with 24 points went to “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden and best back nine to Gary Hill with 18 points, the two’s pot was shared between Steve Gain and Michael O’Keeffe both on hole 2 winning €15 each. The doubles 1st round knockout winners were Brian Court and Steve Day beating John Fairbrass and Brian Gordon on the 18th.

SGS Competition

17th July

 

We started the day with full English breakfast sat outside at Sheerin’s before we travelled up to Font Del Llop.

 

Seventeen players took part in this SGS competition, the format was singles full handicap Stableford split into two groups.

 

On arrival at the course, we received the usual friendly greeting from the caddy master and his staff, the course was in great condition from tee boxes to greens, the weather was overcast to start but once the sun got to work it was a pleasant 35 degrees with a warm breeze in the afternoon.

 

Winner of the SGS competition was “Flying Scotsman” Alan Martin from group A with a handicap cutting score of 44 points, runner up was Steve Gain, again with a handicap cutting score of 40 points.  Winner from group B on count back with Tony Alcock went to Paul Owen both with a handicap cutting score of 42 points.  The winners of the nearest the pins were hole 2 a tie between Alan Martin and Steve Gain both downing in 4 shots, hole 5 “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon, hole 8 Steve Gain, hole 11 Michael O’Keeffe, hole 14 Paul Owen and hole 17 best shot of the day “Sat Nav” Steve Day, best front 9 eventually on countback went to “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon beating “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden with 21 points and best back 9 went to “Sat Nav” Steve Day with 22 points. The €15 two’s pot was not won so the next pot will be €30.  Singles knockout 1/4 final between Steve Gain and Paul Owen eventually went to Steve Gain winning by 2 up.

Plane Parking Trophy

3rd July

 

 

 

First of all, we would like to thank Plane Parking for sponsoring our golf day for the last 10 years. Plane Parking are a large company in the region who take care of your vehicles whilst you are out of the country and have secure parking at Alicante and Corvera Murcia airport.

 

We started with a full English breakfast at our new location, Sheerin’s in Catral, the format for the day was singles full handicap Stableford played in two groups.

 

On arriving at La Finca, we received a friendly and organised greeting from Salva and his staff, the course was in fantastic condition considering we haven’t had a lot of rain since May and the weather was a very hot 40 degrees with a welcome breeze in the afternoon!

 

This was another close competition and the overall winner of the Plane Parking Trophy eventually came from group “B” with a handicap cutting score of 44 points was Paul Owen, runner up with 39 points was Tony Alcock and third place went to “Master Plumber” Nick Chambers with 36 points. Winner from group A, with another handicap cutting score, was “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness with 42 points, runner up, on a three way count back, eventually went to “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon with 37 points and third place went to Joe Bell beating Andy Godfrey also with 37 points. Winners of nearest the pins were group A holes 3 and 5 “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness and hole 17 Michael O’Keeffe, group B hole 4 Tony Alcock, hole 9 Paul Owen and hole 13 “Master Plumber” Nick Chambers, best front nine with 23 points was “Tom Tom” Brian Court and best back nine on a five-way count back went to Nick Chambers with 18 points, the two’s pot was won by John Bolt on hole 16 winning €15.  The singles second round knockout winner was John Bolt beating Lee George 2 up.

This is the sixth year we have played for Lesley’s Myeloma Shield with the day being sponsored by Steve and Jane Day on behalf of Geoff Ham.

 

We travelled to El Plantio golf course with twenty-six players, the weather was blue skies, hot and humid with a temperature of 30 degrees. The course was in good condition even though they had just finished tinning the greens. The format for the day was singles full handicap Stableford split into two groups.

 

The winner for the second year on the run was Simon Dakers from group B with 41 points, runner up was Mike Sharlot with 39 points and third place went to “Hammer” Gary Smith with 34 points. Winner of group A was “Twelve Trees” Steve Ayre with 39 points, the eventual runner up on a three-way count back all with 37 points was Steve Gain, third place was “Ding Dong” Ian Bell and fourth place was “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden. Nearest the pins were group A hole 5 “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly, hole 10 “He’s on Fire” Steve Burns and hole 14 “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden, group B were hole 2 Kenny Dow, hole 7 Simon Dakers and hole 16 Tony Alcock.  Best front 9 went to “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon with 18 points and best back 9 went to “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness with 21 points, the Two’s pot was shared four ways between Michael O’Keeffe, Simon Dakers, Tony Alcock, and Peter Kelly all had a share of the €30.  Match play singles knockout 1st round went to Steve Gain beating Brian Court 3 & 1 and doubles match play knockout went to Sean McGuinness and Steve Burns beating Andy Godfrey and Tony Alcock 6 & 5. The football card was won by Pat Sired with Southampton winning €40 and raising €40 for our charities 2024.

Plaque 5th June

 

 

 

A fantastic day for yet another major competition in 2024, many thanks go to our sponsor for the last five years, Vincent Real Estate. The format was singles full handicap Stableford, there were two groups with prizes for winners, runners up and third and fourth places in group A and winner and runner up in group B, with the best overall points scored over both groups being the winner.

 

On arrival at the course we received a friendly greeting from the Daniel and his staff, the course was in great condition apart from the maintenance work on the fairways to holes 15 and 16. The weather was fantastic at 28 degrees with no wind, perfect for golf.

 

Winner of the Vincent Real Estate Plaque was from group A “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden with a handicap cutting score of 45 points, runner up on a three-way count back was “Tom Tom” Brian Court with 35 points, third place went to “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon with 35 points and fourth place was “Twelve Trees” Steve Ayre also with 35 points. Winner of group B was last year’s overall winner “Sat Nav” Steve Day with 40 points and runner up was Tony Alcock with 39 points. The nearest the pin’s winners were group A hole 8 Steve Gain, hole 12 “Tom Tom” Brian Court and hole 17 to round of a great day “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden, group B hole 3 Tony Alcock, hole 6 guest Jordan Green and hole 18 no winner. Best front nine went to “Flying Scotsman “Andy Ramage with 18 points and best back nine went to Mike Sharlot with 20 points.  The two’s pot was not won so the €15 will be carried over to the next game.

Charity Queens Vase

This is the fourth time we played for the re-named Charity Queen Vase, it used to be the Parkinson’s Vase sponsored by Geoff Ham but he handed the reigns to Don’s Ralph to continue to raise money for our charities.

 

The day started with the usual full English breakfast at Sheerin’s. The weather was very sunny but quite windy in the afternoon as it always is at this course, the temperature was a cool 80 degrees. We have to compliment the ground staff as the course was in excellent condition from the fairways to the greens.  The format was singles full handicap Stableford split into two groups.

 

Winner of the “Charity Queen Vase” from group A, could be handicap secretary’s new friend, was Michael O’Keeffe with a great handicap cutting score of 43 points, runner up of group A with another great score was “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon with 41 points, third place was “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden with 40 points and fourth place was “Sea Captain” Andy Godfrey with 37 points. Winner of group B for the second time was “Hammer” Gary Smith with 37 points and runner up was John Collins with 34 points. Nearest the pin’s winners were group A hole 4 “He’s on Fire” Steve Burns, hole 15 “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness, hole 17 “Sea Captain” Andy Godfrey, group B were hole 5 John Collins, hole 13 “Flying Scotsman” Donald Main and hole 16 “Hammer” Gary Smith, best front 9 went to “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly with 21 points and best back 9 went to “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness with 21 points. The €30 two’s pot was won by the same player as last year Ian Chetwynd on hole 3. The Football card was won by Steve Ayre with Manchester Utd.

Denise Tyrrell Plaque

8th May

 

 

 

This is the eighth year playing for the Denise Tyrrell Plaque.  Denise sadly passed away in 2015 aged 47, she was co-owner with Nikki Large of Baybrooks Restaurant in Algorfa and we thank Baybrooks for their continuing support in sponsoring the plaque and the day’s golf in her memory.

 

The day started with 23 players meeting for breakfast at Sheerin’s. The weather was perfect for golf with clear blue skies and a temperature of 25 degrees. The format was singles full handicap Stableford split into two groups and with 23 players all scores were close from the lowest 25 points to the winning score of 39 points. Considering the high season prices the course was not up to its usual standard with some of the fairways covered over with white sheeting due to the ground being under repair.

 

Winner of the “Denise Tyrrell Plaque” from group A was “Ding Dong” Joe Bell with a score of 39 points, runner up was “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly with a score of 38 points, third place was Steve Hopkins with 37 points and fourth place on count back with “Footsie” Lee George was “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon with 33 points. Winner of group B on count back with Steve Day was “Hammer” Gary Smith with 37 points, runner up was “Sat Nav” Steve Day also 37 points. Nearest the pins winners were group A hole 2 “He’s on Fire” Steve Burns, hole 8 “In for a Penny” Steve Gain, hole 14 “Flying Scotsman” Alan Martin, group B hole 4 Nick Chambers, hole 7 “Fish Called Wanda” Mo Chaplin and hole 13 Tony Alcock, best front 9 went to “Twelve Trees” Steve Ayre with 22 points and best back 9 went to “Mr Celtic” with 20 points. The €15 two’s pot was not won so carried over to our next game. There were two doubles knockout competitions played as well, Peter Kelly and Paul Owen beat Steve Hopkins and Steve Gain 3 & 2, Steve Ayre and Lee George beat Mo Chaplin and Tom Goulden 3 & 2.

 

The football card was won by Dons Ralph with Manchester United winning €40 and adding another €40 for our chosen charities for 2024.

St George's Plaque

This was the first year playing for the New St George’s Day Plaque, and was sponsored by the Golf Society.  The format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups, the course was in good condition throughout, it was a chilly start but once the sun got to work it was a pleasant 75 degrees.

 

This year it was a very close competition with not many points separating 22 players. Winner of the St George’s Day Plaque from group A was “He’s on Fire” Steve Burns with 38 points, eventual runner up on a three-way count back was “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden with 35 points, third place was Steve Hopkins with 35 points and fourth place was “Tom Tom” Brian Court also with 35 points. Winner group B also on a three-way count back was “Sat Nav” Steve Day with 31 points, runner up was “Hammer” Gary Smith 31 points, third place was Tony Alcock also 31 points. Best front nine on count back with Brian Court and Michael O’Keeffe was Tony Alcock with 17 points and best back nine also on count back with Sean McGuinness went to “Footsie” Lee George with 19 points.  Nearest the pins group A were hole 3 “Ding Dong” Joe Bell, hole 9 “Footsie” Lee George, hole 12 “He’s on Fire” Steve Burns, group B holes 4 and 15 Tony Alcock and hole 10 “Templegate” Dave Sanders. The Two’s pot of €15 was shared by the lovers Sean McGuinness and Steve Burns both on the same 8th hole.

 

Back at Sheerin’s there was food and drinks waiting, the football card was won by Tony Alcock with Crystal Palace winning €40 adding another €40 to our charities for 2024.

Vicky Heynes Cup

This was the eighth year of playing for the “Vicky Heynes Cup, many thanks to Tony Heynes for his continued support.

 

The day started with the usual full English breakfast at Sheerin’s where the draw was held, 22 players took part. The course was in great condition as usual and the weather was excellent for golf with sun and a temperature of 26 degrees.

 

Winner of group B, and overall winner was Paul Owen with a handicap cutting score of 40 points, runner up of group B was Tony Alcock with a score of 37 points. Winner of group A was Paul Davison with 35 points, runner up was Steve Martin with 30 points, third place on count back with Lee George and Brian Court was “Sea Captain” Andy Godfrey with 29 points and fourth place on count back with Brian Court was Lee George also with 29 points   There were six nearest the pin’s winners group A hole 2 guest John Hughes, hole 11 guest George Osullivan, hole 16 Andy Godfrey, group B hole 1 Paul Owen, hole 5 no winner and hole 14 went to Tony Alcock. Best front 9 was “Tom Tom” Brian Court with 22 points and best back 9 was “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly with 19 points. The Two’s pot of €15 was won by guest player John Hughes on hole 8. Singles match play knockout 1st round Peter Kelly beat Steve Day 2 & 1, John Fairbrass beat Steve Hopkins 2 & 1, Lee George beat Brian Gordon on the 18th.

 

The football card was won by Christine Davison with Everton winning €40 and raising €40 for our chosen charities for 2024.

St Patrick's Shield

This was our ninth year of the St Patricks Shield and we thank “Sir” Ronnie King for continuing his sponsorship on behalf of the Irish. The format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups with one overall winner. The destination to play was Altorreal where we were greeted by Antonio and his staff, as usual everything was ready and waiting for us, the course was in excellent condition and the weather was a hot and sunny 25 degrees, back to normal wearing shorts perfect for golf.

 

Winner of the “St Patrick’s Shield” came from group B, this was one of the highest scores achieved since the society started and it went to Simon Dakers with an incredible score of 52 points, runner up of group B was the improving Keith James with 32 points and third place went to “Sat Nav” Steve Day with 30 points. Group A winner was Paul Davison with 35 points, runner up was “Twelve Trees” Steve Ayre with 34 points and third place was “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness with 33 points. Nearest the pin’s winners were group A hole 3 “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness, hole 8 John Bolt, hole 11 “Sea Captain” Andy Godfrey, group B hole 4 Tony Alcock, holes 10 and 15 no winners, best front 9 went to “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden with 17 points and best back 9 went to Chris Darling with 17 points, the 2’s pot was won for the third time by “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon on hole 8 winning €15.

 

There were two match play singles knockouts played they were John Bolt playing Steve Burns, John Bolt won 5&3, Steve Ayre played Tony Alcock and Steve Ayre won 4&3.

 

The football card was won by “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly with Chelsea winning €40 and raising €40 for our chosen charities for 2024.

Diabetes Cup

6th March

 

 

 

This is our fifth year that we have played for the Diabetes Cup which is sponsored by Dave Allison (Society Photographer) in memory of his wife Joyce.

 

Twenty-one players took part and the format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups with one overall winner. On arrival at Altorreal we were greeted by Antonio and his team, everything was organised and ready to go and the course was in excellent condition from tee boxes to greens.  The weather was a very pleasant 22 degrees with blue skies, perfect conditions for golf.

 

Winner of the Diabetes Cup was group B winner Tony Alcock with 36 points, runner up of group B was Paul Owen with 30 points and third place went to Keith James with 24 points.  Group A winner was “Tom Tom” Brian Court with 32 points, runner up was “He’s on Fire” Steve Burns with 31 points and third place went to “Footsie” Lee George with 30 points.  Nearest the pin’s winners were group A, hole 6 Sean Mc Guinness, hole 10 “Sea Captain” Andy Godfrey, hole 16 “I’m here in one” John Fairbrass, group B, holes 5 and 18 Tony Alcock, hole 14 Paul Owen.  Best front nine went to Gordon Troy with 17 points and best back nine went to Terry Hall with 15 points, the Two’s pot was shared between Brian Gordon and John Bolt both downing in two on hole 8 so both shared €15. There were two match play singles knockout competition. Paul Owen won 3&2 against Andy Godfrey, Steve Burns and John Bolt ended up all square so replay needed.

 

The football card was won by Dons Ralph with Newcastle winning €40 and raising €40 for our chosen charities of 2024.

Los Amigos Cup

21st February

 

 

 

This is the sixth year we have played for this cup, sadly Tony Whyatt passed away five years ago but fellow members and friends Andy Godfrey and Alan Martin have taken the sponsorship in Tony’s memory.

 

This was our second visit this season to El Plantio, the course was in fair condition considering tee boxes, greens and bunkers weren’t up to their normal standard for high season. Once again, the weather was excellent and with the later tee off at 11.20 the temperature at a pleasant 25 degrees and pure sun. We played Tony’s favourite team format which had four players in a team changing partners every 6 holes scoring with the better ball Stableford points.

 

Six teams took part in a very tight scoring competition with only 12 points between sixth and first places, the eventual winners of the Los Amigos Cup, winning by one point, were Alan Martin, Steve Ayre, Brian Gordon and Andy Ramage with 94 points, runners up were Sean McGuinness, Steve Hopkins, Martin Morgan and Steve Day with 93 points. All the nearest the pins were won hole 1 “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon, holes 4 and 15 “Sea Captain” Andy Godfrey, hole 4 “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness and holes 11 and 18 “I Want my Handicap Cut” Ian Birch, best front 9 went to “I Want my Handicap Cut” Ian Birch with 24 points and best back 9 went to “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden with 22 points, the two’s pot of €15 was shared between “I’ve Had my Handicap Cut” Steve Gain on hole 9 and “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon on hole 7.

 

The football card was won by Steve Day with Blackpool winning €40 and raising €40 for this year’s charities 2024.

9 Iron Cup

7th February

We would like to thank Mo Chaplin for sponsoring the 9 Iron Cup again this year. Twenty-six players took part in this competition, the course was in very good condition considering that only the greens and tee boxes had been watered and they were spraying the fairways green to save water. The weather forecast was very sunny but with a strong wind in the morning, once that died down it was a pleasant 75 degrees, perfect for a day’s golf.  The format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups, A and B with a winner from each group, one being the overall winner.

 

The winner of the 9 Iron Cup was group A winner “I Want My HCP Cut“ Ian Birch with a score of 44 points, runner up in group A was “Tom Tom” Brian Court with 40 points and third place went to “Twelve Trees” Steve Ayre with 38 points.  Winner from group B was Paul Owen with 41 points, runner up was Tony Alcock with 40 points and third place went to our sponsor “Fish Called Wanda” Mo Chaplin with 38 points.  Nearest the pins winners in group A were Steve Ayre hole 4, hole 9 “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon, hole 17 no winner, group B winners were hole 3 “Paw” Derry Quinlan, hole 7 “Flying Scotsman” Andy Ramage and hole 13 no winner, best front 9 on count back with Steve Hopkins went to “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly with 17 points, best back 9, also on count back with Chris Baillie, went to “Sat Nav” Steve Day with 22 points. Scottish Cup

24th January

 

This is the first sponsored cup competition of 2024.  The Scottish Cup (Quaich) is sponsored by our Scottish friends Donald Main and Chris Baillie, unfortunately Chris and Donald could not make the competition this year. The course at Alicante was in excellent condition apart from the tee boxes as they were under repair and the temporary ones were further forward making a different perspective to the course. For the players in the UK the weather was 25 degrees with plenty of sun and a few players still wore shorts. The format was Stableford split into two groups with an overall winner.

 

Winner of “The Scottish Cup” (Quaich) from group A was “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly on count back with “Ding Dong” Ian Bell both with a handicap cutting scores, peter eventually won with 43 points, runner up was “Ding Dong” Ian Bell also with 43 points, third place went to “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon with 40 points and fourth place was “I’m Here In One” John Fairbrass with 39 points. Group B winner was Tony Alcock with 40 points and second place went to “Sat Nav” Steve Day with 35 points. Group A nearest the pin’s winners were hole 4 “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness, hole 13 Philip Naughton and hole 17 “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly, group B winners were holes 6 and 9 Tony Alcock and hole 11 Reid Kane. The twos pot of €15 was shared between Steve Hopkins on hole 6 and Philip Naughton on hole 15.

 

The winner of the football card was “I Never win” Tom Goulden with Norwich winning €40 and raising €40 for our 2024 charities.

SGS Competition

3rd January

 

This was the start of our new season in 2024 with a new name and location at Sheerin’s bar in Catral and what a great start it was at El Plantio.

 

Twenty-two players took part in this SGS competition, the format was singles full handicap stableford split into two groups.

 

On arrival at the course, we received the usual friendly greeting from Daniel and his staff, the fairways and greens were in good condition being that we haven’t had much rain in the last 6 months but some of the tee boxes were a bit bare, the weather was chilly to start but once the sun got to work it was a pleasant 75 degrees.

 

Winner of the SGS competition was “I Want my HCP Cut” Ian Birch from group A with a great HCP cutting score of 41 points, runner up was “Lion” John Fairbrass with a score of 38 points and third place went to Steve Martin with 36 points.  Winner from group B was “PAW” Derry Quinlan with 39 points, runner up was “Lost and Found” Chris Russell with 34 points and third place went to Paul Owen with 33 points.  The winners of the nearest the pins were group A hole 7, “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly, hole 12” Twelvetrees” Steve Ayre and hole 17 “Sea Captain” Andy Godfrey, group B winners were hole 4 no winner, hole 9 “Lost and Found” Chris Russell and hole 11 Paul Owen, best front 9 went to Tony Alcock with 17 points and best back 9 went to Paul Davison also with 17 points. The €15 in the two’s pot was shared between Brian Court, John Fairbrass and Peter Kelly.

 

The Football card was won by John Fairbrass with Rangers winning €40 and raising €40 for our Charities 2024.
