Vicky Heynes Cup

This was the eighth year of playing for the “Vicky Heynes Cup, many thanks to Tony Heynes for his continued support.

 

The day started with the usual full English breakfast at Sheerin’s where the draw was held, 22 players took part. The course was in great condition as usual and the weather was excellent for golf with sun and a temperature of 26 degrees.

 

Winner of group B, and overall winner was Paul Owen with a handicap cutting score of 40 points, runner up of group B was Tony Alcock with a score of 37 points. Winner of group A was Paul Davison with 35 points, runner up was Steve Martin with 30 points, third place on count back with Lee George and Brian Court was “Sea Captain” Andy Godfrey with 29 points and fourth place on count back with Brian Court was Lee George also with 29 points   There were six nearest the pin’s winners group A hole 2 guest John Hughes, hole 11 guest George Osullivan, hole 16 Andy Godfrey, group B hole 1 Paul Owen, hole 5 no winner and hole 14 went to Tony Alcock. Best front 9 was “Tom Tom” Brian Court with 22 points and best back 9 was “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly with 19 points. The Two’s pot of €15 was won by guest player John Hughes on hole 8. Singles match play knockout 1st round Peter Kelly beat Steve Day 2 & 1, John Fairbrass beat Steve Hopkins 2 & 1, Lee George beat Brian Gordon on the 18th.

 

The football card was won by Christine Davison with Everton winning €40 and raising €40 for our chosen charities for 2024.

St George's Plaque

24th April

 

 

 

This was the first year playing for the New St George’s Day Plaque, and was sponsored by the Golf Society.  The format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups, the course was in good condition throughout, it was a chilly start but once the sun got to work it was a pleasant 75 degrees.

 

This year it was a very close competition with not many points separating 22 players. Winner of the St George’s Day Plaque from group A was “He’s on Fire” Steve Burns with 38 points, eventual runner up on a three-way count back was “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden with 35 points, third place was Steve Hopkins with 35 points and fourth place was “Tom Tom” Brian Court also with 35 points. Winner group B also on a three-way count back was “Sat Nav” Steve Day with 31 points, runner up was “Hammer” Gary Smith 31 points, third place was Tony Alcock also 31 points. Best front nine on count back with Brian Court and Michael O’Keeffe was Tony Alcock with 17 points and best back nine also on count back with Sean McGuinness went to “Footsie” Lee George with 19 points.  Nearest the pins group A were hole 3 “Ding Dong” Joe Bell, hole 9 “Footsie” Lee George, hole 12 “He’s on Fire” Steve Burns, group B holes 4 and 15 Tony Alcock and hole 10 “Templegate” Dave Sanders. The Two’s pot of €15 was shared by the lovers Sean McGuinness and Steve Burns both on the same 8th hole.

 

Back at Sheerin’s there was food and drinks waiting, the football card was won by Tony Alcock with Crystal Palace winning €40 adding another €40 to our charities for 2024.

St Patrick's Shield

20th March

 

 

 

This was our ninth year of the St Patricks Shield and we thank “Sir” Ronnie King for continuing his sponsorship on behalf of the Irish. The format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups with one overall winner. The destination to play was Altorreal where we were greeted by Antonio and his staff, as usual everything was ready and waiting for us, the course was in excellent condition and the weather was a hot and sunny 25 degrees, back to normal wearing shorts perfect for golf.

 

Winner of the “St Patrick’s Shield” came from group B, this was one of the highest scores achieved since the society started and it went to Simon Dakers with an incredible score of 52 points, runner up of group B was the improving Keith James with 32 points and third place went to “Sat Nav” Steve Day with 30 points. Group A winner was Paul Davison with 35 points, runner up was “Twelve Trees” Steve Ayre with 34 points and third place was “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness with 33 points. Nearest the pin’s winners were group A hole 3 “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness, hole 8 John Bolt, hole 11 “Sea Captain” Andy Godfrey, group B hole 4 Tony Alcock, holes 10 and 15 no winners, best front 9 went to “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden with 17 points and best back 9 went to Chris Darling with 17 points, the 2’s pot was won for the third time by “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon on hole 8 winning €15.

 

There were two match play singles knockouts played they were John Bolt playing Steve Burns, John Bolt won 5&3, Steve Ayre played Tony Alcock and Steve Ayre won 4&3.

 

The football card was won by “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly with Chelsea winning €40 and raising €40 for our chosen charities for 2024.

Diabetes Cup

6th March

 

 

 

This is our fifth year that we have played for the Diabetes Cup which is sponsored by Dave Allison (Society Photographer) in memory of his wife Joyce.

 

Twenty-one players took part and the format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups with one overall winner. On arrival at Altorreal we were greeted by Antonio and his team, everything was organised and ready to go and the course was in excellent condition from tee boxes to greens.  The weather was a very pleasant 22 degrees with blue skies, perfect conditions for golf.

 

Winner of the Diabetes Cup was group B winner Tony Alcock with 36 points, runner up of group B was Paul Owen with 30 points and third place went to Keith James with 24 points.  Group A winner was “Tom Tom” Brian Court with 32 points, runner up was “He’s on Fire” Steve Burns with 31 points and third place went to “Footsie” Lee George with 30 points.  Nearest the pin’s winners were group A, hole 6 Sean Mc Guinness, hole 10 “Sea Captain” Andy Godfrey, hole 16 “I’m here in one” John Fairbrass, group B, holes 5 and 18 Tony Alcock, hole 14 Paul Owen.  Best front nine went to Gordon Troy with 17 points and best back nine went to Terry Hall with 15 points, the Two’s pot was shared between Brian Gordon and John Bolt both downing in two on hole 8 so both shared €15. There were two match play singles knockout competition. Paul Owen won 3&2 against Andy Godfrey, Steve Burns and John Bolt ended up all square so replay needed.

 

The football card was won by Dons Ralph with Newcastle winning €40 and raising €40 for our chosen charities of 2024.

Los Amigos Cup

21st February

 

 

 

This is the sixth year we have played for this cup, sadly Tony Whyatt passed away five years ago but fellow members and friends Andy Godfrey and Alan Martin have taken the sponsorship in Tony’s memory.

 

This was our second visit this season to El Plantio, the course was in fair condition considering tee boxes, greens and bunkers weren’t up to their normal standard for high season. Once again, the weather was excellent and with the later tee off at 11.20 the temperature at a pleasant 25 degrees and pure sun. We played Tony’s favourite team format which had four players in a team changing partners every 6 holes scoring with the better ball Stableford points.

 

Six teams took part in a very tight scoring competition with only 12 points between sixth and first places, the eventual winners of the Los Amigos Cup, winning by one point, were Alan Martin, Steve Ayre, Brian Gordon and Andy Ramage with 94 points, runners up were Sean McGuinness, Steve Hopkins, Martin Morgan and Steve Day with 93 points. All the nearest the pins were won hole 1 “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon, holes 4 and 15 “Sea Captain” Andy Godfrey, hole 4 “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness and holes 11 and 18 “I Want my Handicap Cut” Ian Birch, best front 9 went to “I Want my Handicap Cut” Ian Birch with 24 points and best back 9 went to “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden with 22 points, the two’s pot of €15 was shared between “I’ve Had my Handicap Cut” Steve Gain on hole 9 and “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon on hole 7.

 

The football card was won by Steve Day with Blackpool winning €40 and raising €40 for this year’s charities 2024.

9 Iron Cup

7th February

We would like to thank Mo Chaplin for sponsoring the 9 Iron Cup again this year. Twenty-six players took part in this competition, the course was in very good condition considering that only the greens and tee boxes had been watered and they were spraying the fairways green to save water. The weather forecast was very sunny but with a strong wind in the morning, once that died down it was a pleasant 75 degrees, perfect for a day’s golf.  The format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups, A and B with a winner from each group, one being the overall winner.

 

The winner of the 9 Iron Cup was group A winner “I Want My HCP Cut“ Ian Birch with a score of 44 points, runner up in group A was “Tom Tom” Brian Court with 40 points and third place went to “Twelve Trees” Steve Ayre with 38 points.  Winner from group B was Paul Owen with 41 points, runner up was Tony Alcock with 40 points and third place went to our sponsor “Fish Called Wanda” Mo Chaplin with 38 points.  Nearest the pins winners in group A were Steve Ayre hole 4, hole 9 “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon, hole 17 no winner, group B winners were hole 3 “Paw” Derry Quinlan, hole 7 “Flying Scotsman” Andy Ramage and hole 13 no winner, best front 9 on count back with Steve Hopkins went to “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly with 17 points, best back 9, also on count back with Chris Baillie, went to “Sat Nav” Steve Day with 22 points. The Two’s pot was shared between “I Want My HCP Cut” Ian Birch and “He’s on Fire” Steve Burns both on hole 3 winning €7.50 each. The football card was won by Steve Ayre with Blackpool winning €40 and €40 to our Charities for 2024.

Scottish Cup

24th January

 

This is the first sponsored cup competition of 2024.  The Scottish Cup (Quaich) is sponsored by our Scottish friends Donald Main and Chris Baillie, unfortunately Chris and Donald could not make the competition this year. The course at Alicante was in excellent condition apart from the tee boxes as they were under repair and the temporary ones were further forward making a different perspective to the course. For the players in the UK the weather was 25 degrees with plenty of sun and a few players still wore shorts. The format was Stableford split into two groups with an overall winner.

 

Winner of “The Scottish Cup” (Quaich) from group A was “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly on count back with “Ding Dong” Ian Bell both with a handicap cutting scores, peter eventually won with 43 points, runner up was “Ding Dong” Ian Bell also with 43 points, third place went to “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon with 40 points and fourth place was “I’m Here In One” John Fairbrass with 39 points. Group B winner was Tony Alcock with 40 points and second place went to “Sat Nav” Steve Day with 35 points. Group A nearest the pin’s winners were hole 4 “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness, hole 13 Philip Naughton and hole 17 “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly, group B winners were holes 6 and 9 Tony Alcock and hole 11 Reid Kane. The twos pot of €15 was shared between Steve Hopkins on hole 6 and Philip Naughton on hole 15.

 

The winner of the football card was “I Never win” Tom Goulden with Norwich winning €40 and raising €40 for our 2024 charities.

SGS Competition

3rd January

 

This was the start of our new season in 2024 with a new name and location at Sheerin’s bar in Catral and what a great start it was at El Plantio.

 

Twenty-two players took part in this SGS competition, the format was singles full handicap stableford split into two groups.

 

On arrival at the course, we received the usual friendly greeting from Daniel and his staff, the fairways and greens were in good condition being that we haven’t had much rain in the last 6 months but some of the tee boxes were a bit bare, the weather was chilly to start but once the sun got to work it was a pleasant 75 degrees.

 

Winner of the SGS competition was “I Want my HCP Cut” Ian Birch from group A with a great HCP cutting score of 41 points, runner up was “Lion” John Fairbrass with a score of 38 points and third place went to Steve Martin with 36 points.  Winner from group B was “PAW” Derry Quinlan with 39 points, runner up was “Lost and Found” Chris Russell with 34 points and third place went to Paul Owen with 33 points.  The winners of the nearest the pins were group A hole 7, “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly, hole 12” Twelvetrees” Steve Ayre and hole 17 “Sea Captain” Andy Godfrey, group B winners were hole 4 no winner, hole 9 “Lost and Found” Chris Russell and hole 11 Paul Owen, best front 9 went to Tony Alcock with 17 points and best back 9 went to Paul Davison also with 17 points. The €15 in the two’s pot was shared between Brian Court, John Fairbrass and Peter Kelly.

 

The Football card was won by John Fairbrass with Rangers winning €40 and raising €40 for our Charities 2024.
