This was the second time the St Patrick’s Shield has been played for, thank you to Ronnie King for sponsoring the shield and days golf.  We had last year’s winner, Carol Murphy, over from Ireland to defend her title but playing at a lower handicap this year.

Twenty two players met at Imanyo’s where the day started with the usual full English breakfast, the format was full handicap Stableford split into three groups with one overall winner and runner up.  The venue was Bonalba where we were greeted by Richard and his staff, everything was ready and waiting the course was in very good condition apart from a few bunkers which were washed out due to the storms a few days before and two tee boxes were being repaired.  The par 3’s were set well back and the wind made them difficult, overall the weather was sunny but breezy especially on the back nine.

Winner of the “St Patrick’s Shield” (this year from England) was group B winner, Alec Aspden on count back with 27 points, runner up was group A winner, Alan Martin with 27 points.  Group A winner was Alan Martin with 27 points and runner up was “He’s Back” John Macmillan with 26 points, group B winner was Alec Aspden with 27 points and runner up was “On the Radar” Andy Godfrey with 23points, group C winner was Tony Whyatt with 20 points and runner up was Andy Ramage with 16 points.  Only two of the four nearest the pins were won, hole 4, representing Ireland, Francis Murphy and hole 8 “On The Radar” Andy Godfrey.

We sold two football cards, one was won by Francis Murphy with Blackburn and the other card was won by Jane Day with Middlesborough both winning €20 each and raising €40 for our chosen charity Caritas Daya Nueva.

We would like to thank Ronnie King for sponsoring the day with some great prizes and novelty gifts, also Antonio, Norma and staff at Imanyo’s Bar for the fantastic food and great hospitality.

The weather was pure blue skies but that was about as far as the Spanish weather went...there was a cold howling wind so the attire of the day for 90% of us was winter gear, coats, hats and gloves, we did have two players who braved it in shorts. The course was in its usual good condition and our normal warm welcome was there from the staff.

Group A winner was new member Chris Houghton with 25 points, runner up “I’m wearing shorts” was John Kemp with 23 points.  Group B winner, with handicap cut again was Dave Moore with 34 points, runner up “Your On The Radar” was Andy Godfrey with 31 points.  Group C winner was Carol Murphy with 25 points, runner up was new member Jim Wells with 17 points.  Three nearest the pins were won, back from the UK to defend his title hole 3 “The Wine Collector” Brian Court, hole 8 Andy Godfrey and hole 16 Dave Field.

Back at Imanyo’s there were a few drinks and a lovely meal waiting.  The football card, which was carried over from Burns night with a prize of €100, was won by Phil “Minty” Ward with Blackpool, the money raised from the card, €100.00, goes to our charity for 2017 Caritas Daya Nueva.  Thanks to Antonio, Norma and staff for their hospitality.

Scottish Cup 25th January at Alicante Golf

This is our major fund raising competition of the year, The Scottish Cup which is followed by our Burns Night event.  The golf day is sponsored by our Scottish friends Andy Ramage, Alex Porteous, Chris Baillie and Donald Main, who unfortunately could not make it this year.  Alicante golf was our destination for the 18 players and upon arrival, as per usual, we were welcomed by the friendly staff and received our complimentary coffee and tostada, the weather and course were perfect for golf as was reflected in the scores.

The format was pairs Texas Scramble scoring Stableford points, players were paired up into nine teams with a lower handicap player pairing with a higher handicap player, there were only two shots between the highest and lowest.

Winners of “The Scottish Cup” (Quaich) on count back were Chris Baillie and John Fullicks with 39 points, runners up were Andy Ramage and inform partner Martin Gadney, also on 39 points, third place was Alec Aspden and our favourite lady winner Carol Murphy on 38 points.  Four out of the six nearest the pins were won, hole 3 Chris Baillie, hole 6 Eamon Murphy, hole 8 John Fullicks and hole 17 Alec Aspden, hole 15, the longest drive with a putter, was won by Ken Walker.

Special thanks to Dons Ralph from all society members for selling raffle tickets and football cards throughout the year, one football card was sold on the night and the winner with Blackpool was Ken Walker winning €100 and raising €100 for this year’s charity, we also ran a raffle which raised €673 with all the money (€873) going to our sponsored charity for 2017, Caritas Daya Nueva.

We would like to thank all the businesses, golf courses and people who donated prizes to the raffle, also Jane Day and team along with the staff at Imanyo Bar, Antonio and Chef Vanessa for the fantastic food and great hospitality.

Back at Imanyo’s there was food and a few drinks waiting, a huge thank you goes to our Sponsor, Tony Heynes, who paid for all the golfers to eat.  The football card was won by Super Ted with Blackburn Rovers adding another €20 for Caritas Daya Nueva.
