Anne Goldsmith Rememberence Rose Bowl 19th December at Altorreal

 

This was the second time we have played for this trophy, Anne sadly passed away suddenly two years ago and will be missed by all, many thanks to her husband Harry, son and daughter, David and Nicola, for sponsoring the day in her name, David actually flew over Tuesday, played golf Wednesday and returned to the UK Thursday to play in this remembrance competition for his Mum.

 

We had a fantastic turnout for the visit to our favourite course, Altorreal; the weather was a cold start but as soon as the sun got to work the day was perfect for golf at a pleasant 70o. We played pairs full handicap stableford scoring Stableford points adding both players scores together.

 

Winner of the Anne Goldsmith Remembrance Rose Bowl was “The handicap Secretary’s Favourite Player” Terry Fitzgerald with 43 points and his partner John palmer with 33 points making total of 76 points, on count back runners up were another favourite of the handicap secretary, Mo Chaplin who partnered “The Wine Collector” Brian Court with 70 points, third place was player of the year 2017 and 2018 Martin Gadney, partner with Steve Arye on 70 points.  All of the nearest the pins were won,  hole 2 David Goldsmith, hole 5 John Palmer, holes 8, and 17 Peter List, hole 10 “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph and hole 14 “The wine Collector” Brian Court.

 

The football card was won by Wally Donovan with Newcastle Utd winning €40 and raising €40 for this year’s charities, Caritas Daya Nueva, S.A.T.S. and A.E.C.C. cancer care.

 

We would like to say a special thank you to Café Bar Hogar Parroquial with Juan and his family for making it a special day with their lovely welcome and fantastic hospitality, and of course great food.

Ted Adams Trophy 5th December at Bonalba

 

This was the fourth time we have played for this trophy, many thanks to Ted and Ann Adams for sponsoring the day, their son Neil flew over hoping to try and regain the Trophy he last won  two years ago.

 

We had a very good turnout for our visit to Bonalba, the course was in excellent condition and the day was perfect for golf with the sun out making a pleasant 70 degrees. The format for the day was full handicap Stableford split into two groups.

 

Winner of the”Ted Adams Trophy” from group B was one of our elder statesman, Tony Whyatt, with an excellent 37 points, runner up in group B was Alan Freelove with 31 points, winner of group A was Chris Houghton with 31 points and runner up was player of the year 2018, Martin Gadney with 29 points. Only two of the four nearest the pins were won, he needed this to tie with Andy Godfrey for the most nearest the pins trophy this year on hole 2 was John Mcmillan, hole 8 was won by Alec Aspden.

 

The Football card was won by “The Wine Collector” Brian Court with Portsmouth “winning €40 and raising €40 for our chosen charities Caritas Daya Nueva, S.A.T.S. and A.E.C.C. Cancer Care.

Dave Rotchell Birthday Salver 21st November at Font Del Llop

 

This is the fourth year the salver has been played for at Font Del Llop. Twenty players met at Imanyo’s for the traditional English breakfast. The format was singles Stableford full handicap. For those in the UK the weather was warm with bright sunshine in the afternoon. This time last year holiday players sported shorts but today all players wore their warmer trousers!

 

Winner of the Dave Rotchell Birthday Salver was Chris Darling with a credible score of 40 points from group B. runner up from group B was Steve Ayre with 35 points.  The winner of group A was John McMillan with 37 points who beat runner up “The Wine Collector” Brian Court on count back.  The winner of group C was Terry Fitzgerald with 33 points and runner up was Mo Chaplin with 32 points. Nearest the pins were won by "Keep it in the Family" Alan Ralph, holes 3 and 8, “The Joker” Mick Billins, hole 12 and Donald Main, hole 16. There was no winner for hole 17 which means the prize went into the raffle for our charity.

 

The presentation was held at Imanyo’s Bar,many thanks to Dave Rotchell, who unfortunately was unable to attend, for sponsoring the prizes thanks also to Mick for standing in for Steve, Ted for standing in for Dave and Antonio, Norma and all staff for looking after us. The winning football card, again Tottenham Hotspur, was won by Mick Billins winning €40 and raising €40 for our charities Caritas Daya Nueva, S.A.T.S. and A.E.C.C. Cancer Care.

Phil Ward Carers Cup 7th November at Altorreal

 

This is the fifth year this cup has been played for and third year for raising funds for the always popular poppy appeal.

 

Twenty four players met at Imanyo’s for the traditional English breakfast. The format was full handicap Stableford pairs, for those in the UK the weather was sunshine and a pleasant 70 degrees and players were still in shorts and T-shirt.

 

Winners of the Phil Ward Carers Cup and with his name on the cup for the fourth time in five years was Eamon Murphy with his partner Alec Aspden with an excellent score of 69 points, runners up were “The Wine Collector” Brian Court and Tony Whyatt with 65 points and third place went to John Mcmillan and Martin Gadney with 64 points.  Nearest the pins were won, hole 2 “The Joker” Mick Billins, hole 5 PJ McInerney, hole 8 Carol Murphy, hole 14 “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph and hole 17 Craig Justham.

 

The presentation was held at Imanyo’s bar, many thanks to Phil and Margaret Ward for sponsoring and presenting the prizes, and  Mick the Grip Reeves for sponsoring the poppy appeal.  Thanks to Antonio, Norma and all staff for looking after us. The football card was won by Ben with Tottenham Hotspur winning €40 and raising €40 for the poppy appeal.

José Domingo Garcia Gallud Cup 17th October at Altorreal

 

This is our fifth year of the forming of the society and we started the year off by playing for the José Domingo Garcia Gallud Memorial Cup in memory of Antonio’s (Imanyo’s owner) younger brother who sadly died in a car accident 21 years ago.

 

Twenty five players travelled to our favourite course, Altorreal, the course and weather was absolutely perfect for golf considering they had thunder storms the previous night.

 

The format was full handicap Stableford split into three groups.  Winner of the José Domingo Garcia Gallud Memorial Cup was, for the first time from group C, Graham Rumsey with a fantastic handicap cutting  42 points, runner up in group C was Tony Whyatt with an excellent 37 points, winner of group B was another regular name, “The Joker” Mick Billins, again handicap cutting 39 points, group B runner up was “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph with 35 points, group A winner was Alan Martin  with 38 points, runner up of group A was another regular name, Chris Houghton, with 34 points.  There were six nearest the pins only five were won, winners were hole 2 Alan Martin, hole 5, “The Joker” Mick Billins, hole 8 “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph, hole 14 Alan Byrne and hole 17 Graham Butterworth.

 

The presentation was held at Imanyo’s where Antonio and his son José presented the prizes on behalf of his family.  Afterwards we finished with the usual good food and drink, thank you to Antonio, Norma and all the staff for looking after us.  The football card was won by Dave Williams with Hibernian raising €40 for our chosen charities, Caritas Daya Nueva, S.A.T.S. and A.E.C.C. Cancer Care.

Keep It In The Family Cup 3rd October at Bonalba

 

This is the first time we played singles for this competition which is sponsored by Alan and Wendy Ralph, unfortunately Wendy could not take part this year as she has had an operation on her shoulder so all the pressure was on her husband to try and keep the cup in the family!

 

All players arrived very early at Imanyo’s where the day started with the traditional full English breakfast, the format was full handicap Stableford split into three groups.  On arriving at the course we received the usual friendly greeting from Richard and his staff, the course is improving all the time and was found in excellent condition well done ground staff.

 

Winner of the Keep It In The Family Cup was Ian Chetwynd from group C with an excellent and handicap cutting score of 42 points, runner up in group C again was Steve Day with 30 points, winner of group A on count back was Chris Houghton with 36 points, runner up of group A was Martin Gadney with 36 points, winner of group B, again on count back and with handicap cutting scores was Alex Porteous with 39 points, runner up of group B was Chris Baillie with 39 points.  There were six nearest the pins won by, hole 4 John Mcmillan, holes 6 and 11 Alex Porteous, hole 8, first time in four years and what a shot it was! Steve Day, hole 14 Eamon Murphy and hole 17 Martin Gadney.

We held a table top raffle raising money for our charities this year so many thanks to all our members for supplying and donating towards this raffle also thank you to Antonio, Norma and all the staff for looking after us, the football card was won by “Watch My Ball” Dave Rotchell with Celtic raising another €40 for our charities added to the €137 from the raffle gave us a total of €177 to our chosen charites Caritas Daya Nueva, S.A.T.S. and A.E.C.C. Cancer Care.

Vacation Cup 9th - 10th September at Hotel Envia

 

This is the first year of the Vacation Cup which was played over two days at the 5* Hotel Envia Wellness and Golf in Almeria.  There were twelve of us on this trip, 8 golfers and 4 non-golfers.  The format was based on the Ryder Cup with two teams, Chairman against Vice Chairman, the first day was doubles and the deciding day was singles and whilst the golfers played the non-golfers enjoyed their first day lazing round the pool and using the hotel facilities and on the second day they enjoyed the organised tapas trip into Almeria. The Chairman’s team was, Captain, Steve Day playing with Miguel Garcia, Dave Sanders and Wendy Ralph.  The Vice Chairman’s team was, Captain, Mick Billins playing with Alan Ralph, Martin Gadney and Mo Chaplin.

 

First Day Doubles Results
Dave Sanders and Miguel Garcia beat Martin Gadney and Mo Chaplin by 4 holes, scores were 58 points to 50 points
Mick Billins and Alan Ralph beat Steve day and Wendy Ralph by 4 holes, scores 56 points to 43 points, this left the overnight score as Chairman 1, Vice Chairman 1...all to play for the next day with 4 singles matches to decide the vacation cup 2018.

 

Day Two Results
Martin Gadney beat Steve day by 4 holes, scores 33 points to 25 points
Dave sanders beat Mick Billins by 6 holes, scores 37 points to 31 points
Alan Ralph beat Miguel Garcia by 3 holes, Scores 30 points to 29 points
Wendy Ralph beat mo Chaplin by 10 holes, scores 30 points to 14 points

Chairman 3, Vice Chairman 3


The match was decided on total Stableford scores as a tie breaker.
Chairman 222, Vice Chairman 214, therefore the winners of the 2018 Vacation Cup were the Chairman’s team, Steve Day, Dave Sanders, Miguel Garcia, and Wendy Ralph...Looking forward to next year now!

Wyn Evans Salver 19th September at Font Del Llop

 

This is one of the society’s most popular competitions with 26 players taking part for our second outing of the new season.

 

All players arrived very early at Imanyo’s where the day started with the traditional full English breakfast, the format was full handicap Stroke play or medal play, split into three groups.  On arriving at the course we received the usual friendly greeting from David and staff, the course was in excellent condition.

 

Winner of the Wyn Evans Salver was “The Wine Collector” Brian Court from group B with an excellent net score of 68, second place in group B was Dave Martin, net score 71, winner of group A was Peter List, net score 69, runner up of group A was Alan Martin, net score 72, winner of group C was “The Joker” Mick Billins, net score 70, runner up of group C was Steve Day, net score 79. There were seven nearest the pins Holes 3 and 14 Andy Godfrey, holes 7 and 17 guest member Colin Hepher, hole 8 Ray Hamilton, hole 12 “The Wine Collector” Brian Court and hole 16 Mo Chaplin just stopping Andy Godfrey getting the Treble.

Collins Continental Cup 5th September at Altorreal

 

It was a fantastic day for the first competition of the new season which was sponsored by Danny and Sharon Collins from England.

 

The day started with the traditional full English breakfast in Imanyo’s, twenty players took part and the format was full handicap Stableford playing in three groups with an overall winner.

 

On arrival at Altorreal we received the usual friendly greeting with everything ready and waiting, the course was in its usual great condition and the weather was very hot and humid.

 

Winner of the Collins Continental Cup was “Mr Handicapper Himself” Martin Gadney from group B with 39 points, runner up in group B was Miguel Garcia with 34 points, group C winner on count back was “The Joker” Mick Billins with 33 points, runner up was Alan Byrne with 33 points, group A winner was Chris Houghton with 36 points, runner up was last year’s winner Liam Collins with 32 points.  There were seven nearest the pins and a longest drive, Chris Houghton won on holes 2 and 5, Dave Martin won hole 8, “Mr Handicapper” Martin Gadney won hole 9, Steve Ayre won hole10, Liam Collins won hole 16, he’s back “The wine collector” Brian Court won hole 17 and Longest Drive on hole 14, with only two on the fairway beating Steve Day, was last year’s winner Chris Houghton.

IGS Competition 15th August at Altorreal

 

This is the first time we have had a Scotsman get the treble up, overall winner, the only nearest the pin and winner of the football card. “Guess who”?

 

As usual the day started with breakfast and the draw being made at Imanyo's, small on numbers with players in UK and the other factor...HEAT so only 12 players took part with the format being Texas scramble pairs scoring Stableford points with one player teeing off on odd numbers and the other player teeing off even numbers.

 

The weather was extremely hot with high humidity. The course was in good condition for the middle of summer but they have had a few thunder storms which washed out quite a few of the bunkers, lucky because “Sandy” Terry Burton only went in one!

 

Winners were regular names “I’m Playing Very Well” Alex Porteous and “Two Wins on the Bounce” Mo Chaplin with 33 points, runners up were “I Want My Handicap Cut” Steven Ayre and “Man on Form” Ronnie King with 32 points. Only one nearest the pin was won and guess who by “I’m playing very well” Alex Porteous on hole 5, the prizes for the other three nearest the pins are donated to the annual raffle.

 

The presentation was held at Imanyo’s where good food and a few drinks were waiting.  The football card was won by Alex Porteous, claiming the treble with Sheffield united...he said all the Scottish teams had gone. He kindly donated half the winnings back so making €60 to our charities for 2018, Caritas Daya Nueva, S.A.T.S. and A.E.C.C. Cancer Care.  Thanks to Antonio, Norma and staff for their hospitality.

IGS Competition 1st August at Bonalba

 

 As usual the day started with breakfast and the draw being made at Imanyo's, 16 players took part with the format being singles stroke play split into two groups, this was the last time for some of the players to get their last card in before the new handicap system comes into effect on 1st September.

 

The weather was extremely hot and the course was in excellent condition for the middle of summer, there is still a little work in progress around the back nine but many thanks to Richard and his staff for all their hard work.

 

Winner of group A, with no medical problems! was Andy Godfrey with net 80, runner up was “Player Of The Year 2017” Martin Gadney with net 83, winner of group B was, first time back after a break, Mo Chaplin with net 89 and runner up of group B was Tony Whyatt on count back from new member Lozz Maslanka with net 94. Nearest the pin winners were hole 8, Andy Godfrey, hole 11, guest player Paul Tomkins and hole 14 Alex Porteous.

 

The presentation was held at Imanyo’s where good food and a few drinks were waiting.  The football card was won by The Chairman Steve Day with Portsmouth winning €40 and €40 raised from the card goes to our charities for 2018, Caritas Daya Nueva, S.A.T.S. and A.E.C.C. IGS Competition 18th July at Font Del Llop

 

First of all I would like to thank Alan Martin for donating all the prizes for this IGS competition.  As usual the day started with breakfast at Imanyo's, 16 players took part with the format being pair’s full handicap Stableford.

 

Winners, who were claiming no sleep, bad back, painful shoulder and many other medical issues! were “Mr Sick Note” Andy Godfrey and staying out of bunkers “Sandy” Terry Burton with a magnificent 66 points, runners up were “Keep it in the Family “Alan Ralph and our “Spanish Champion” Miguel Garcia on count back from, “I’m Playing Very Well” Alex Porteous and Steve Day with 51 points.  Nearest the pins winners were, hole 3, “The Joker” Mick Billins, hole 8, “Mr Sick Note” Andy Godfrey, holes 12 & 16 “Sandy” Terry Burton and hole 17 Donald Main.

 

The presentation was held at Imanyo’s where good food and a few drinks were waiting.  The football card was won by “Charities Secretary” Dons Ralph with Norwich City winning €40 and €40 raised from the card goes to our charities for 2018 Caritas Daya Nueva, S.A.T.S.  and A.E.C.C. Plane Parking Trophy 4th July at El Plantio

 

This was our last trophy competition of the season competing for the Plane Parking Trophy and what a great finish we had, Plane Parking are a large company in the region who take care of your vehicles whilst you are out of the country and  have secure parking at Alicante, Murcia and starting in January the new Corvera Murcia airport.

 

We started with a full English breakfast in Imanyo’s and the format for the day was singles full handicap Stableford played in three categories.

 

On arriving at El Plantio we received a friendly and organised greeting from all the staff and the course was in fantastic condition.  As we are in the middle of summer the temperature was in the mid 30’s, so hard going for some of us high handicappers.

 

Five players came in with the winning total of 31points, Steve Ayre, Alec Aspden, Martin Gadney, Miguel Garcia and David Coffey but the overall winner of the Plane Parking Trophy from group “A” on a five way count back was David Coffey with 31 points, runner up of group A was Miguel Garcia, also with 31 points.  Group “B” winner was Steve Ayre, also with 31 points and runner up was last year’s winner “Keep It In The Family” Alan Ralph with 28 points.  Group “C” winner was “Sandy” Terry Burton with 18 points and runner up, on count back from Steve Day was “Keep It In The Family” Wendy Ralph with 17 points.  Nearest the pins were won by, hole 7 Andy Godfrey, hole 9 Steve Ayre, hole 14 David Coffey and hole 18 Alan Martin.

Vicky Heynes Memorial Cup 20th June at Altorreal

 

This was the third time we played for the “Vicky Heynes Memorial cup” sadly the sponsor, Tony Heynes, was unable to make it to Spain, due to illness, for the competition.

 

The day started with the usual full English breakfast at Imanyo’s where the draw was held, 28 players took part and the format was full handicap Stroke play split into three groups, A, B, and C.  The venue was Altorreal and as usual everything was ready and waiting for our arrival, weather was fantastic as expected for this time of year and the course was in excellent condition, many thanks to Antonio and his ground staff.

 

Winner of group A, and overall winner with an incredible score playing off a 9 handicap, was Ray Hamilton with a net score of 67, runner up of group A was last year’s winner with par for the course Martin Gadney with a net score of 71.  Group B winner, also with par for the course was “keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph with a net score of 71, runner up of group B was “ I’m Jet Lagged” Ian Bell with a net score of 77.  Group C winner was “I want my handicap cut“ Terry Fitzgerald Snr with a net score of 81, runner up of group C was Chris Baillie with a net score of 86. There were six nearest the pins, winners were hole 2 in 2 shots “The Joker” Mick Billins, hole 5 Ray Hamilton, hole 8 Alan Martin, hole 10 Graeme Forest, hole 14 in 3 shots (which he did putt out) was Steven Arye and hole 17, he’s back “The Wine Collector“ Brian Court.

 

Back at Imanyo’s there was food and a few drinks waiting, a huge thank you goes to our sponsor, Tony Heynes for donating all the excellent prizes.  The football card was won by Jon Bass with Leicester City winning €40 and he kindly re-donated the winnings back to our chosen charities making €80 for Caritas Daya Nueva, S.A.T.S. and A.E.C.C. Cancer Care.

Tony Firth Auctions Plaque 6th June at Bonalba

 

A fantastic day for another major  competition in 2018, many thanks to Tony Firth Auctions for sponsoring the days golf and putting up some great prizes. The format was singles full handicap Stableford playing in three categories with prizes for winners and runners up from each group with the highest score being the overall winner.

 

On arrival at the course we received a friendly greeting from Richard and staff at Bonalba, the course was in great condition, the weather was slightly overcast and humid, we all managed to complete the course before the thunder storms hit.

 

Winner of the Tony Firth Auctions Plaque was Group A winner David Martin on count back with a fantastic 37 points, runner up from Group A was “Catch Me If You Can” John Mcmillan also with 37 points, winner of Group B was Chris Darling with 32 points, runner up from Group B was Chris Baillie with 28 points, winner of Group C was Terry Fitzgerald Snr with 22 points, runner up from Group C was Jamie Kilpatrick with 20 points.  The nearest the pins winners were hole 4 Andy Godfrey, hole 8 “Elvis Is In The Building” Dave Field, who just beat Steve Day who has taken four years to hit the green!!! hole 11 “Catch Me If You Can” John Mcmillan and hole 14 Alec Aspden.

Caritas Charity Trophy 23rd May at Font Del Llop

 

It was a fantastic day for our local charity, Caritas Daya Nueva, this day is sponsored by all the members of the golf society.

 

The day started with a full English breakfast in Imanyo’s, the format was be Full handicap Stableford split into three groups.

 

On arriving at the course we received a friendly greeting from the staff at Font Del Llop, the course was in fantastic condition, summer has arrived so it was a bit hard going for some of the high handicappers.

 

Winner of the Caritas Charity Trophy and group A was “Catch Me If You Can” John Mcmillan with a fantastic 37 points, runner up was “Mr Consistent” Andy Godfrey with 31 points.  Winner of group B was Ian Chetwynd with 31 points, runner up was Steve Arye with 22 points.  Winner of group C was “Keep it in the Family” Wendy Ralph with 24 points, runner up was Steve Day with 17 points, well  done Steve!  Nearest the pins winners were, holes 3 and 17 “Catch Me If You Can” John Mcmillan, hole 7 “Mr Consistent” Andy Godfrey and hole 14 “Mr Scorecard” Martin Gadney.

A Football card was sold and the winner was Dave Williams with West Bromwich Albion winning €40 and raising €40 for our charities Caritas Daya Nueva, S.A.T.S. and A.E.C.C. Cancer Care.

Parkinson's Charity Vase 9th May at El Plantio

 

This is our fourth year for this popular competition the “Parkinson Vase” a special thanks goes to Geoff Ham, the sponsor of the day, who is a Parkinson’s sufferer and specially travelled from the UK for the competition.

 

Twenty eight players turned out with over 25% of these making the trip from the UK to play in this competition. The day started with the usual full English breakfast at Imanyo’s, the format was full handicap Stroke play playing in three groups. This was the first time we have played at El Plantio in two years and we found the course in excellent condition and the weather was perfect with light cloud, slight breeze and 25o.

 

Winner of the “Parkinson’s Vase” and group A was Peter List with par for the course net 72, runner up was Andy Godfrey with net 78 and third was “The Wine Collector” Brian Court with net 80.  Group B winner was Alan Byrne with net 78, runner up was Steven Ayre with net 81 and third was Stuart Barclay with net 83.  Group C winner was “Keep It In The Family” Wendy Ralph with net 87, runner up was Tony Whyatt with net 88 and third was “Watch My Ball” Dave Rotchell with net 90.  Nearest the pins were all won , hole 2 in 3 shots by Chris Houghton, hole 7 in 1 shot by “Catch Me If You Can” John Mcmillan, hole 9 in 1 shot by Andy Godfrey, hole 14 in 1 shot by Stuart Barclay, hole 16 in 2 shots by Andy Godfrey and hole 18 in 1 shot by Martin Gadney.

 

We raised a grand total on the day of €285, this was all in aid of Parkinson’s, the fund raising was made up of 2 football cards, making €80, players were charged €1 for every ball in the water making €30 and a further €175 was raised with a table top raffle, thank you Don’s for your selling skills.

Denise Tyrrell Memorial Plaque 25th April at Altorreal

 

This was the third time the Denise Tyrrell Memorial Plaque has been played for, Denise sadly passed away on 28th April three years ago at the tender age of 47, she was Co-owner of Baybrooks Restaurant in Algorfa and we thank Baybrooks for sponsoring the plaque and the day’s golf.

 

The day started with the usual full English breakfast at Imanyo’s. Then we headed off to our favourable course Altorreal with fingers crossed that the weather forecast was going to be wrong, well it wasn’t, it didn’t stop raining for about four hours but that did not deter the twenty four players.  The format was Texas scramble, better ball Stableford scoring.

 

Winners of the “Denise Tyrrell Memorial Plaque” were “The wine collector” Brian Court and new member “watching your handicap” Steven Ayre with 36 points, runners up were “Watch my ball” Dave Rotchell and Eamon Murphy with 33 points, nearest the pins winners were hole 5 Chris Houghton, hole 8 Andy Godfrey, holes 10 and 17 he’s been waiting three years to win a nearest the pin and then two came along, Andy Ramage.

 

Back at Imanyo’s there was food and a few drinks waiting, the two football cards were won by  Dave Williams with Crystal Palace and Tracy Goldring with West Brom, adding another €40 for our charities this year, Caritas Daya Nueva, S.A.T.S. and A.E.C.C. cancer care.

St George's Day Plaque 12th April at Bonalba

 

This was the third time the St George’s Day Plaque has been played for, thank you to Imanyo’s for sponsoring the plaque and the golf day.  The format was foursome’s pairs scoring Stableford points. The course was in great condition compared to the last time we played there in February, well done Richard Davis and his ground staff. 

 

Winners of the St George’s Day Plaque were “The Joker” Mick Billins and “On the Radar Already” Chris Darling with 50 points, runners up were “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph and Steve Day with 45 points, best front nine on count back was “Mr Score Card” Martin Gadney with 14 points, best back nine was “On the Radar Already “Chris Darling with 18 points.  All nearest the pins were won, hole 4 by Alan Martin, hole 8 by Terry Fitzgerald, hole 11 by Peter List and hole 14 by “Mr Score Card” Martin Gadney.

 

Back at Imanyo’s there was a few drinks and food waiting, the football card was won by Eamon Murphy with Bristol City adding another €20 to our charities, Caritas Daya Nueva, S.A.T.S. and A.E.C.C. Cancer Care.

IGS Competition 28th March at Font Del Llop

 

The day started with the traditional English breakfast at Imanyo's, 24 players took part with the format being full handicap stroke play scoring Stableford points and split into three groups.

 

The weather...well the clocks went back at the weekend and someone turned temperature up to 29o with brilliant blue skies, perfect for golf on one off the most challenging courses in the area which was in great condition.

 

The winner of group A with 34 points, including four blobs and playing off 9 handicap, was Alan Martin, runner up of group A on count back was Ray Hamilton with 28 points just beating Craig Justham, winner of group B was Miguel Garcia with 26 points, runner up was “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph with 25 points, winner of group C was “The Joker” Mick Billins with 25 points, runner up on count back was “The Flying Scotsman” Andy Ramage with 20 points, just beating “I’m still trying” Steve Day.  Nearest the pins were hole 3 in one shot, Alan Martin, hole 7 in two shots, Chris Darling, hole 13 in three shots, our guest player, John Hughes and hole 17 in one shot “The Carer” Phil Ward.

 

The presentation was held at Imanyo’s where good food and a few drinks were waiting.  Winners of the football cards were “Elvis is in the Building” Dave Field with Leeds and “The Flying Scotsman” Andy Ramage with Hibernian both winning €20 and raising €40 for our charities for 2018, Caritas Daya Nueva, S.A.T.S. St Patrick's Shield 15th March at Altorreal

 

This was the third time the St Patrick’s Shield has been played for, 25 players met at Imanyo’s where the day started with the usual full English breakfast, the format was full handicap stroke play split into three groups with one overall winner.  The venue was Altorreal where we were greeted by Antonio and his staff, as usual everything was ready and waiting for us, the course was in very good condition.  I was informed by one or two of our members that this was the first time in many years that the gates were open on holes 4 and 12 to the back tees, the views were fantastic and added another perspective to the holes. The weather was overcast but breezy.

 

Winner of the “St Patrick’s Shield” (from England) was group B winner, Ian Bell with net score 73 (2 over par) runner up group B was “Hello I’m Back from the Rigs” Donald Main with net score 78.  Group A winner on count back was “2017 Player of the Year” Martin Gadney with net score 76 and runner up was Chris Houghton also with net score 76. Group C winner was “Elvis is in the Building” Dave Field net score 79, and runner up was Graham Rumsey net score 80. Nearest the pins winners were hole 4 in two shots Martin Gadney, hole 8 in one shot “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph, hole 14 in three shots “The Joker” Mick Billins and hole 17 in one shot “Catch me if you Can” John Mcmillan.

 

We sold two football cards, one was won by “Mr Endeavour” Wally Donovan with Portsmouth and the other card was won by “Elvis is in the Building” Dave Field with QPR, both winning €20 and raising a total of €40 for our chosen charities, Caritas Daya Nueva, S.A.T.S. Animal Rescue and A.E.C.C. Cancer Care.

Captains Cup 21st February at Altorreal

 

Imanyo golf society Captains Cup was sponsored by The Vegetable Garden and Mick the Grip, they both made sure we had a great days golf with an excellent presentation back at Imanyo’s.  We played at Altorreal where we were greeted with the usual organised set up, the course was in great condition and the weather was a bit cold but warmed up when the sun broke through.

 

Twenty one players took part and the format we played was full handicap Stableford, we split into three groups with a winner from each group and one being the overall winner.

 

Winner of the Captains cup from group A on count back was Dave Martin with 31 points, runner up in group A was “2017 player of the year” Martin Gadney also with 31 points. Winner from group B, also on count back was “Ten from Ken” Ken Walker with 27 points and runner up in group B was “Elvis is in the Building” Dave Field also with 27 points. Winner from group C was “I would like my handicap cut“ Terry Fitzgerald with 21 points and runner up was the other half of “keep it in the family” Wendy Ralph with 18 points.  Only three of the four nearest the pins were won, hole 5 “Catch me if you can” John Mcmillan, hole 8 John Kemp and hole 17 “Ten from Ken” Ken Walker.

 

The football card was won by “Watch my ball” Dave Rotchell with Hibernian winning €40 and raising €40 for this year’s charities, Caritas Daya Nueva S.A.T.S. and A.E.C.C. Cancer Charity.

IGS Competition 7th February at Bonalba

 

The day started with the traditional English breakfast at Imanyo's, 18 players took part with the format being full handicap stroke play scoring Stableford points and split into three groups with an overall winner.

 

The weather was cold (for us locals) but sunny and perfect for golf.  The course was in reasonable condition although some of the bunkers needed a bit of attention, we could see there was work in progress to improve the course.

 

The winner of group A and overall winner with 32 points was”Mr Sick Note for the Day” Andy Godfrey, runner up of group A was “2017 Player of the Year” Martin Gadney with 26 points, winner of group B was “Elvis is in the Building” Dave Field with 26 points and runner up was Dave Moore with 25 points, group C winner was new member Chris Darling with 25 points and runner up was “Watch my Handicap” Tony Whyatt with 23 points.  Nearest the pins were the four par threes, holes 3 and 11 were won by “Catch Me if you Can” John McMillan, hole 8 Tony Whyatt and hole 16 “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph.

 

The presentation was held at Imanyo’s where great food and a few drinks were waiting.  Winner of the football card was our Charity Queen, Dons Ralph with Manchester United winning €20 and raising €20 for our charities for 2018, Caritas Daya Nueva, SATS Animal Rescue and AECC Cancer Care.  Thanks to Antonio, Norma and staff for their hospitality.

Scottish Cup 24th January at Font Del Llop

 

The Scottish Cup (Quaich) is our major fund raising competition of the year and the golf day is sponsored by our Scottish friends Chris Baillie, Alex Porteous, Donald Main, Andy Ramage and Graeme Forrest, Graeme unfortunately could not make it this year.  Font Del Llop was our destination for the 28 players and on arrival we were welcomed by friendly staff, the course was in its usual pristine condition and the weather was perfect for golf, the majority of players wore shorts.

 

The format was pairs Texas Scramble scoring Stableford points, players were paired up into fourteen teams with a lower handicap player pairing with a higher handicap player, there was only one shot between the highest and lowest pairings.

 

Winners of “The Scottish Cup” (Quaich) on count back from three pairs were 2016 player of the year Donald Main paired with “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph with 39 points, runners up were “The Flying Scotsman Andy Ramage and “I’ve not played since October” Alex Porteous, also on 39 points, third place was “on the podium again” Tony Whyatt with up and coming player Craig Justham also with 39 points.  All five of the nearest the pins were won, hole 3 Terry Fitzgerald, hole 8 Peter List, hole 12 “The Joker” Mick Billins, hole 16 Chris Baillie and hole 17 Judy Evans.

 

Special thanks to Dons Ralph from all society members for selling raffle tickets and football cards throughout the year, one football card was sold and the winner with Sheffield Wednesday was “Mr Endeavour” Wally Donovan winning €40 and raising €40 for this year’s charities, we also ran a raffle which raised €811, all the monies (€851) going to our sponsored charities for 2018, Caritas Daya Nueva, SATS Animal Rescue and AECC Cancer Care.

 

We would like to thank all the businesses, golf courses and people who donated prizes to the raffle and thanks to Antonio, Norma and all the staff for the fantastic food and great hospitality.

José Domingo Garcia Gallud Cup 10th January at Alicante - Re-play from 2017

 

This is the fourth year of the forming of the society and we started the year off by playing for the José Domingo Garcia Gallud Memorial cup in memory of Antonio’s (Imanyo’s owner) younger brother who sadly died in a car accident 20 years ago.

 

The numbers were a little bit low as many of the players were struck down with Man Flu.  The format was full handicap Stableford split into three groups. On arriving at Alicante the weather was just brightening up after overnight rain, we ended up with good golfing conditions although there was a wind.

 

Winner of the José Domingo Garcia Gallud Memorial Cup was group A winner Chris Houghton  with 29 points, runner up in group A was “ Ten from Ken” Ken Walker with 25 points, winner of group B was another regular winner when he is here, Donald Main with 26 points, group B runner up was Dave Moore with 22 points, group C winner was Dave Sanders with 21 points, runner up Tony Whyatt with 18 points.  There were six nearest the pins and the winners were hole 3 Chris Houghton, hole 6 Rik Wood, hole 9 in two shots Donald Main, hole 12 Donald Main, hole 15 in two shots Andy Godfrey, hole 17 there was no winner.

 

The presentation was held at Imanyo’s where Antonio’s son José presented the prizes on behalf of his family.  Afterwards we finished with the usual good food and drink, thank you to Antonio, Norma and all the staff for looking after us.  The football card was won by Brian Court with Sheffield Wednesday raising another €20 for our charities for 2018, Caritas Daya Nueva, SATS Animal Rescue and AECC (Cancer Care).
